What is my calling? This is something I think every man and woman, christian and even non often ask. I mean really, we cannot be born, live, work, populate and then die. There has to be more to it. There has to be a reason we were given the gift of life in the first place. I pondered this thought from very early on in my life, and I have never stopped. Every day as far back as I can remember, I have asked God, what is my calling? My purpose? At one point I thought I was supposed to be an actress on Neighbours. Once it was a palaeontologist, and a few times it was Mother Teresa’s assistant! I’m pretty sure the Father was smiling big time about all of my so-called callings.
If you look at the above paragraph, you will notice I mixed my calling with a career. Sure they can sometimes be interlinked and that's great. At other times they are as far from east to west. What if you found out your pastor was a cleaner, would you think any less of him? Or your worship leader was a stay at home Mother? Would you still show her the respect she deserves, being chosen by God? Yet, these two examples clearly state that regardless of their profession, God has placed a pretty significant calling & purpose on their lives.
So what are doing right now? Are you walking out your calling, or are you stuck and unsure about it? Hey, I have been there. I can’t speak for everyone, but when I became mother, I knew it was a calling placed on my life. To raise my babies and be an example to them, to love them, guide them and even discipline them. What a great call it was and still is! Believe me I have a while before they are ready to fly from the nest. But even serving in one of the greatest ministries I could think of (Parenthood), I felt that something was missing. In my heart I longed to learn the mysteries of God. I longed to help others, change lives in His name and see people saved. I had no idea how to do it. So I sat down and wrote out a few questions for me to ponder. Here they are:
*What do you see yourself doing for God?
*What drives you? What do you truly love doing daily?
*What is an area you are talented in?
*Are you willing to give things up in order to follow God and do his work?
I know those questions sound easy, but honestly think about your Uniqueness. God has already placed something in your heart to do with his plans. Take time to read the word, listen in the silence, think about areas you are drawn to, e.g. visiting the elderly, speaking to the youth, praying for your leaders, encouraging mothers. What social issues right now stand out to you?
For I know the plans I have for you ” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
If you wait on the Lord and diligently seek him, he will reveal where you need to be. And just remember you may find your calling, and that's great. But remember, don't get too comfortable because God will use you also in areas you never even saw coming!
- God Bless
