Pray Right- 3 Steps to help

First off, I just want to say that I don’t think there’s a method to praying. I used talk to God, and it didn’t really sound authentic. It was as if we were separated by sky, and I felt like I wasn’t truly speaking from the heart. There are no right words to repeat, and there are no thoughts that need to be unspoken, because God knows everything about us. He knows before we ever utter a sentence, but speaking and communing with the Father is a way He longs to draw us into a more personal connection. He longs to see us stand on His word for all that we come to Him with.

But in case you’re feeling a little stuck, in Matthew 6:8-13 Jesus tells us to speak to the Father in Prayer.

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11

Give us today our daily bread.

12

And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.

Just to make this post a little more interesting I want to share three things I always make sure to do when I’m talking to God.

  1. Gratitude - I thank God for loving me and always being available

  2. Truth - I tell Him exactly how I’m feeling, and what’s on my heart.

  3. Guidance - I ask God for His guidance on the matter, and to direct my path or lead me to the next step He is asking me to take.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phillipians 4:6-7
