3 Steps to being Brave

Our Heavenly Father calls us to be Brave! Yet… there’s been many times in my life and probably many more times to come when I’m not exactly powering forward with strength and confidence to take on whatever God is asking me to do. Truth is, I like my comfort zone. That cozy little bubble where nothing can hurt me, and it’s just me and my Lord, drinking coffee and chatting the day away.
But… God has called me time and time again to rise up and start walking, to go boldly into the purpose He has planned for me and complete the challenge. I’m not going to write that I always did as He instructed. Many times I was scared and stood my ground, shaking my head the entire time saying, “Nope, not going to happen God!” And sometimes He would stop pushing me, simply replying, “Then don’t.” I would feel as if I had let Him down, that what He was asking me to do in someway may have been something important I was missing out on, a lesson I would never know the outcome to.
As the years have worn on, I didn’t want to keep feeling as if I was perhaps giving up gifts, a part of my purpose or not gaining wisdom as to whatever God was calling me to do. I started to realise that Being Brave didn’t mean being fearless. No, being brave is stepping out in spite of fear. It’s doing something that maybe you sometimes don’t want to do, like forgive after you’ve been hurt. It could be loving someone despite their hate. It’s finding courage to speak up, when what you really want to do is stand in the back corner of a room. Below are three steps I hope will help you find your brave. And here’s the best part…
Brave looks different for
each and every one of us.
Step outside your comfort zone
We only need to look in the pages of the bible to see time and time again the accounts of bravery. Look at David! To stand there with nothing but a sling and some stones, ready to take on a mammoth of a man called Goliath. What about Moses? He really didn’t want to go back into Egypt, and yet he did, and eventually led his people out of there and through the red sea. Being Brave can be scary, but when we trust God, that He is with us the entire way, we can find a strength we never knew we had. It could be a new town we are called to, a new job, speaking in front of a crowd, reaching out to new friends. For each one of us, stepping out of our comfort zone looks different.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
2. Choose Faith
Sometimes choosing faith over fear is all the brave we need in the season we are in. We could being facing financial troubles, relationship woes, or health issues. Those times can be scary and can really pull us into a downward spiral. Oh, but the bravery it takes to stand with all of those problems and trust that God has it all in hand is courageous!
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1
3. Share the Word
This was something I struggled to do when I was younger, in fear of being yelled at or rejected. Sometimes it was simply because I felt I wasn’t equipped enough with knowing the word. Oh, but how wrong I was. The Holy Spirit is always with us, and even just a kind word allows Him to witness to another. Sometimes we just have to get brave and share how much we love Jesus, and then let our daily walk be the proof of His unfailing love, and how He instills in us kindness, forgiveness and a compassionate heart. I’m not going to sugar coat it, there are going to be times you come across people that are cruel, but keep your integrity, because God sees your heart and your motivation. It will take courage to keep going sometimes, but you can do it!
Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6
I pray you find your brave today. Just remember Peter in the boat. He went when the Lord called to him. Yet, He stumbled when he took his eyes off Jesus. Just keep looking ahead, Keep your focus on our saviour, for He will never leave or forsake you. Our God is love, and love casts out all fear.
Love Sarah, xx
