3 Scriptures to Move Past Bitterness


Bitterness is a hard place to be in, and a hard place to move on from. I know this, because like most people reading this, I have found myself there many times. And I am so thankful that God has given me a platform where I get to share completely transparent about the struggles I often face daily.


What starts as hurt, which may have come from family members, friendships, workplace or even sadly at times within the walls of our own churches, festers... We don't deal with the hurt and hand it over to God, so before we know it that pesky thorn of hurt, anger & rejection digs in deeper until a root of bitterness takes hold.


Like me, maybe it's happened over years of having the same kind of hurt happen over and over again & you didn't even see how your heart had hardened. When we reach that place we have to fall to our knees and ask our Heavenly Father to step in, and soften us once again.


One thing I knew I had to do was search God's truth and hold on tight to His promises daily. It wasn't an overnight miracle (though I wish it had been!) what it taught me was that even this bitterness was used to teach me a lesson & gain testimony of a loving Father who gave me strength & comfort daily.

So here are just a few of the scriptures I keep close to my heart, when going through major hurt. I mean, I literally stick these verses on my toilet door, bathroom mirror and on my fridge, as I break free of Bitterness & hurt.


Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.NIV


The reason I love this verse above, is that it causes me to pause and focus on the word PURPOSE! It reminds me that I need to keep in mind that God does good by those that love Him.


Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.


This verse in Philippians allows me to direct my attention on all the good things in my life. I think about the blessings, and what joy they have brought.


Psalms 51:10 “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me”


I love everything about Psalms! If you want a rollercoaster of a ride with emotions, this book is for you. But this passage speaks volumes. You see, when we allow a root of bitterness to grow, we are essentially resisting the prompting of the Holy Spirit who wants to whisper the truth to us. But how great is it that we can kneel before the Lord with honesty and ask that He create in us a clean, renewed heart!


I know at times life doesn’t seem fair and we are tempted to give up and fall into bitterness. Trials will come and pass over & over, but God’s grace is given in abundance for those who trust in Him through the tough times of life. When we realise that even thought hard times & mountains or giants will always try to stand in our way, but our God is dependable and solid, we can push through becoming stronger & stronger by the day. So don't let bitterness stop you from running the race.
